President Donald Trump sat down with CBS Evening News anchor Tony Dokoupil on Tuesday for a wide-ranging interview that took several unexpected turns.
Conducted on the floor of a Ford plant in Detroit, the 15-minute conversation touched on everything from economic policy to international relations.
But it was Trump’s personal comments to Dokoupil—and his remarks about a controversial ICE shooting—that became the most talked-about moments.

Trump made headlines when he directly told Dokoupil that his employment hinged on the 2024 election outcome.
While discussing what he characterized as economic turmoil under the Biden administration, Trump suggested that a Kamala Harris victory would have resulted in widespread job losses—including Dokoupil’s own position.

Trump made several bold assertions about economic conditions that didn’t quite align with official data.
Most notably, Trump claimed “there’s no inflation,” later adjusting to say inflation had dropped to levels not seen in roughly nine years.
According to Department of Labor statistics, consumer prices actually rose 2.7% in December. Additionally, inflation dipped below 2% at multiple points during Trump’s first term—contradicting his timeline.
When Dokoupil noted that everyday Americans still feel economic pressure, Trump defended his record by pointing to his relatively short time back in office.

Trump also claimed to have “ended eight wars,” a statement that fact-checkers from the Associated Press and other organizations have labeled as significant hyperbole.

Trump promised “very strong action” against Iran if the regime executes protesters amid widespread civil unrest sweeping through the country.
However, he declined to specify what form that action would take, leaving both journalists and international observers without concrete details about potential U.S. intervention.
Renee Good Shooting Becomes Interview’s Most Revealing Moment
Perhaps the most significant exchange came when Dokoupil pressed Trump about the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent.
Dokoupil revealed he had spoken with Good’s father, describing him as “a big supporter of yours” who is now devastated by two losses: his daughter’s death and the administration’s swift characterization of her as a domestic terrorist.
He’s heartbroken because his daughter is dead. He’s also heartbroken because your administration so quickly has come out and said she’s a domestic terrorist. What do you want to say to her father right now?
Trump’s response began with broad sentiments about loving “all of our people,” regardless of political affiliation.
I would bet you that she under normal circumstances was a very solid, wonderful person, but pretty tough.
He then pivoted to defending ICE and criticizing Biden before returning to discuss the shooting itself.
Video Evidence “Can Be Viewed Two Ways”
In a notable departure from his administration’s official stance, Trump acknowledged ambiguity in the video footage of Good’s killing.
The Department of Homeland Security had quickly stated that Good attempted to strike an ICE officer with her vehicle, justifying the use of lethal force.
When you look at that tape, it can be viewed two ways, I guess. But when you look at the way that was, that car was pulled away. There are a couple of versions of that tape that are very, very bad.
This admission that multiple interpretations exist contrasts sharply with his administration’s immediate and definitive characterization of Good as a threat.
