Taylor Swift just dropped one of her most creative music videos yet, and it’s built entirely around a joke made during a late-night talk show appearance.
The “Opalite” video, released exclusively on Spotify and Apple Music, features celebrity cameos from her fellow “Graham Norton Show” guests back in October.
But here’s where it gets interesting: the entire concept originated from a single offhand comment made during filming.
And somehow, Swift managed to turn that split-second inspiration into a ’90s fever dream complete with pet rocks, sparkly tracksuits, and a fake cleaning product infomercial.
From Talk Show Banter to Full-Blown Production
During her October appearance on “The Graham Norton Show,” Swift sat alongside actors Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Domhnall Gleeson, and musician Cillian Murphy. What seemed like typical promotional appearances transformed into something completely unexpected.
When we were all talking during the broadcast, Domhnall made a light hearted joke about wanting to be in one of my music videos. He’s Irish! He was joking! Except that in that moment during the interview, I was instantly struck with an *idea*.
Swift explained on X that she moved quickly on her inspiration. Just one week after the show aired, Gleeson received an email containing a full script she’d written, casting him as the starring role.
The concept? A ’90s-themed absurdist narrative centered around a fictional cleaning spray called Opalite.
A ’90s Infomercial Meets Surreal Romance
The video opens with a vintage-style advertisement promoting Opalite cleaning spray, complete with promises to “magically transform your problems into your paradise.” The fake product claims it works on friendships, couples, pets, and co-workers using “state-of-the-art chemical potion.”
Swift’s character begins by unboxing a pet rock as her new best friend. The two engage in classic friendship activities—making friendship bracelets, belting karaoke, hitting bars together.
Then things take a turn.
Gleeson appears in an abusive relationship with his pet cactus. Frustrated by constant arguments, he orders Opalite and sprays the plant, causing Swift to materialize in his home. They begin dating, commemorating their bond with cheesy mall photos shot by photographer Lewis Capaldi.
Every Graham Norton Guest Makes an Appearance
Each celebrity from that October taping appears in distinctly ’90s contexts:
- Greta Lee portrays a singer-songwriter featured on MTV
- Jodie Turner-Smith hosts an exercise program
- Cillian Murphy appears as an Opalite spokesperson on mall advertising
- Graham Norton himself plays an Opalite salesman
The video concludes with Swift and Gleeson competing at a dance competition wearing sparkly mint-green-and-orange tracksuits. A meta moment in the credits shows all the video’s stars back on “The Graham Norton Show.”
A Love Letter to Collaborative Creativity
Swift described the experience as reminiscent of a school group project, except voluntary and involving acclaimed actors and musicians.
I had this thought that it would be wild if all of our fellow guests on ‘The Graham Norton Show’ that night, including Graham himself, could be a part of it too. Like a school group project but for adults and it isn’t mandatory.
She wrote on X that she felt “ridiculously lucky” with her Graham Norton lineup, noting they were “all people whose work I’ve admired from afar.”
To Swift’s delight, everyone agreed to participate, making the effort to “time travel back to the 90’s” for the production.
The Personal Meaning Behind “Opalite”
Beyond the video’s playful aesthetic, the song carries significant personal meaning. Swift revealed during the “Showgirl” rollout that her fiancé Travis Kelce considers it his favorite track from the album.
I think that’s his favorite. He loves that one. That one was like, I have favorite words, favorite phrases, things I’ll put in an endless file of lyrics that I’m constantly going to go and cherry-pick from when I’m writing, and I had written down the word ‘opalite’ because I learned that it’s actually a manmade opal.
She explained the title references Travis’ birthstone, opal, and discovered that opals can be manufactured like diamonds.
The concept became a metaphor: if opals can be manmade, so can happiness.
Strategic Release and Chart Performance
Swift teased the video release Wednesday with a countdown on her website, clearly stating it would debut at 8 a.m. ET Friday exclusively on Apple Music and Spotify Premium. YouTube access begins February 8 at 8 a.m. ET.
“Opalite” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 during “Showgirl’s” first tracking week. The track has maintained strong performance, recently landing at No. 10 during its 17th chart week.
“The Life of a Showgirl” arrived in October with staggering commercial success—2.7 million copies sold on day one. The album later surpassed Adele’s “25” as the most-consumed album in Billboard 200 history.
Lead single “The Fate of Ophelia” became Swift’s 13th No. 1 single, spending 10 non-consecutive weeks atop the Hot 100. Its music video premiered at “Official Release Party of a Showgirl” theatrical screenings before hitting YouTube.
With “Opalite,” Swift proves once again that spontaneous creative inspiration—even originating from casual talk show banter—can evolve into elaborate artistic statements when seized with intention and collaborative spirit.
