Nine years, five seasons, and countless trips to Upside Down later, Stranger Things finally said goodbye on New Year’s Eve with a massive two-hour finale.
Fans had been speculating for months: Would Vecna finally be defeated?
Would everyone make it out alive?
And most importantly—what would become of Eleven and Hawkins gang?
Real Emotions Behind Final Scenes
According to cocreator Ross Duffer, what viewers witnessed wasn’t just acting. Speaking with Deadline ahead of the finale, he revealed something powerful about those closing moments.
So much of the final scenes that you see, I mean, yes, people are acting, but in a way, they’re not. Those are real emotions that they’re feeling, because those are all the last scenes that we captured with these actors.
Translation? Those tears were very real.
Vecna Finally Falls
After five seasons of terror, Vecna met his end through coordinated teamwork. Eleven came face-to-face with Mind Flayer in Abyss, while her friends launched a multi-pronged assault.
Dustin and Steve attacked from below. Nancy fired her rifle with precision. Mike, Lucas, and Jonathan hurled bombs and flares.
Will tapped into hive mind and ripped off Vecna’s arm as Eleven battled his physical form inside Mind Flayer’s chest cavity. She managed to impale him on a spire—but it was Joyce who delivered the killing blow, decapitating Vecna with an axe.
Why Joyce?
We went through every character going, ‘Who gets the final blow on Vecna?’ Then once we landed on Joyce with that axe, us and the writers were like ‘She’s got to be the one.’ It just feels right.
Steve Lives (Thank God)
Fans had been dreading Steve Harrington’s potential death for months. Fortunately, Hawkins’ beloved dreamboat survived—though not without a scare.
While atop radio tower, Steve slipped and nearly plummeted to his death. Jonathan caught him just in time.
Matt Duffer clarified that this moment served a bigger purpose than just fan torture.
It wasn’t designed to torture fans who are terrified that Steve is gonna die. I’ve never really understood why they’re so worried about Steve dying. Really, it was about him and Jonathan coming together, and that’s why that moment is in there.
Steve and Jonathan’s relationship had been marked by jealousy and competition over Nancy. This rescue symbolized understanding—a final resolution of tension within the group.
Ross Duffer explained it perfectly: the duo represented the last source of conflict that needed resolving before Vecna could be defeated.
Eleven’s Heartbreaking Choice
Victory came with a devastating price.
As gang exited Upside Down, Dr. Kay and her troops cornered them—determined to control Eleven at any cost. To protect her loved ones, Eleven made an impossible decision.
She stood at Upside Down’s entrance, knowing she’d be destroyed along with it. Before disappearing, she pulled Mike into void for one final goodbye as Prince’s “Purple Rain” played.
A supercut of their relationship—from childhood to present—flashed across screen.
None of this will ever end, not if I’m still here. I need you to thank them for me, for being so kind to me, and teaching me what it means to be a friend. Mike, I need you to help them understand my choice.
For Duffer brothers, Eleven’s departure was always inevitable.
There was never a version of the story where Eleven was hanging out with the gang at the end. For us and our writers, we didn’t want to take her powers away. She represents magic in a lot of ways and the magic of childhood. For our characters to move on and for the story of Hawkins and the Upside Down to come to a close, Eleven had to go away.
Story of Mage: Hope vs. Reality
In finale’s closing moments, gang gathered for one last Dungeons & Dragons game. Mike told story of Mage—understood to represent Eleven.
According to Mike’s tale, Mage escaped Upside Down and found peace in remote village. Everyone listened with tears streaming down their faces, choosing to believe Eleven survived.
Matt Duffer described two possible roads for Eleven’s fate—one dark and pessimistic, another optimistic and hopeful.
Mike is the optimist of the group and has chosen to believe in that story.
Ross Duffer emphasized beauty in ambiguity, noting that characters holding onto hope represented perfect closure for their journey from childhood to adulthood.
Only one person knows Eleven’s true fate: Millie Bobby Brown herself. Matt Duffer confirmed she’s sworn to secrecy, warning fans not to waste their time asking.
40-Minute Epilogue Shows Life After Vecna
Rather than ending on battle, finale featured extended epilogue set 18 months later on graduation day. This gave audiences something precious: closure.
Each character found happiness in their own way:
- Steve became Little League coach and sex ed teacher
- Nancy dropped out of Emerson College, landed job at Boston Herald
- Jonathan studied film at NYU
- Robin enrolled at Smith College
- Joyce and Hopper got engaged
- Mike pursued writing
- Dustin attended college, remained best friends with Steve
- Lucas and Max stayed together
- Will started fresh in big city
Matt Duffer told Netflix’s Tudum that creators wanted each character discovering happiness in their own specific ways.
Ross Duffer added that extensive discussions happened with actors, who all had specific ideas about where their characters should end up. Creators wanted them continuing journeys they’d started years ago.
After nine years of interdimensional horrors, friendship, and growing up, Stranger Things closed its chapter. Not with certainty—but with something arguably more powerful: hope.
