Steve Burton, beloved for his portrayal of Jason Morgan on General Hospital, is stepping away from Port Charles for a personal reason that fans are celebrating.
The Daytime Emmy-winning actor announced on February 10 that he’s taking a short hiatus to focus on his new marriage and family.
His decision comes at an interesting time in his character’s storyline, with Jason deeply entangled in dangerous situations involving former lover Britt Westbourne and longtime associate Sonny Corinthos.
But for Burton, family comes first—and viewers will still have plenty of Jason Morgan content to watch before his temporary exit airs.
A Well-Deserved Break for Newlywed Life
Burton shared his news via Instagram, explaining his reasoning with heartfelt simplicity.
Hey everyone, I wanted to share that I’ll be taking a short break from General Hospital. I’m newly married and looking forward to spending some quality time with my family. I’m grateful for all the support and will be back this summer. Much love.
Burton married chef and content creator Michelle Lundstrom on May 17, 2025, and clearly wants to prioritize his new chapter together. According to Soap Opera Digest, Burton has already filmed his final episode for now, with his last day at the studio occurring on Friday, February 6.
Because General Hospital tapes several weeks ahead of airtime—especially before production hiatuses—fans won’t see Burton’s absence reflected on screen immediately. There’s still plenty of Jason Morgan storyline coming down the pipeline.
Full Support From General Hospital Leadership
General Hospital Executive Producer Frank Valentini expressed nothing but support for Burton’s decision to take personal time.
We love Steve and I am glad the show worked it out so he can get some personal time with his family. We have some great Jason story leading up to spring and look forward to his return in the summer.
Valentini’s statement reassures fans that Burton’s hiatus is temporary and amicable—a far cry from some of his previous departures from Port Charles.
A History of Coming and Going
This isn’t Burton’s first rodeo when it comes to taking breaks from General Hospital. His relationship with the show spans more than three decades, filled with departures, returns, and crossovers to other soaps.
Burton first appeared in Port Charles back in 1991 when he was just 21 years old. He left in 1999 after deciding not to renew his contract, airing his last episode in January 2000.
He returned briefly that August, then again for several months in 2001, before coming back full-time in May 2002.
The 2012 Departure That Changed Everything
Ten years into his full-time return, Burton made another difficult choice to leave General Hospital in 2012. Reflecting on that decision in 2017, he acknowledged how emotionally challenging it was.
It was definitely one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make in my entire life. I grew up on the show, since I was 21 years old. The crew is like my family and obviously a lot of the cast were, too, and it was really difficult to leave but I needed a little bit of a change, as it turned out. As much as, emotionally, it was tough for me, looking back now, I feel it was the right decision for me and my family.
After leaving GH, Burton joined Young and Restless in 2013 as Dylan McAvoy, Nikki Newman’s surprise son. His performance earned him another Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor before he wrapped that role in 2017.
Multiple Returns and Another Recast
In 2017, Burton returned to General Hospital to reclaim Jason Morgan—though things had gotten complicated during his absence. Jason had been recast in 2014 with Billy Miller, who tragically passed away in 2023.
When Burton came back, writers revealed that Miller’s character wasn’t actually Jason but rather his previously unknown twin, Drew Cain, who’d been programmed with Jason’s memories. Talk about a soap opera twist.
Burton left again in 2021 following General Hospital’s implementation of a Covid vaccine policy. He then moved to Days of Our Lives, where he’d actually started his soap career in 1988 with a short-term role as Harris Michaels.
He reprised Harris on Peacock’s Beyond Salem miniseries in July 2022, then appeared on Days’ main show from March 2023 until June 2024 (though he finished filming at the end of 2023).
The Triumphant 2024 Return
On January 4, 2024, during a prime-time ABC special titled General Hospital: 60 Years of Stars & Storytelling, Burton’s return was announced. He appeared alongside longtime co-stars Kelly Monaco and Laura Wright with a tantalizing tease.
Happy anniversary, General Hospital. Stay tuned — big things are coming to Port Charles.
His first episode back aired on March 4, 2024, and fans have been thrilled to have Jason Morgan back in action ever since.
What’s Happening With Jason Morgan Right Now?
Burton’s temporary departure comes at a particularly intense moment for his character. Jason has recently rekindled his relationship with former lover Britt Westbourne, played by Kelly Thiebaud.
Britt is currently facing grave danger from villain Sidwell, portrayed by Carlo Rota. Sidwell also threatens Jason’s longtime associate Sonny Corinthos and Mayor Laura Collins, creating a complex web of danger that Jason has been working to neutralize.
In a recent episode, Jason learned that his friend Anna Devane—played by Finola Hughes—has supposedly suffered a mental breakdown and been institutionalized in France. But Jason suspects the WSB has something sinister to do with her circumstances.
How writers will handle Burton’s absence during this critical storyline juncture remains to be seen, but General Hospital has decades of experience navigating actor schedules and departures.
What This Means for Fans
For viewers invested in Jason Morgan’s storylines, Burton’s hiatus is bittersweet. On one hand, losing a central character—even temporarily—can disrupt narrative momentum and emotional investment.
On the other hand, Burton’s decision to prioritize his marriage and family is deeply relatable and admirable. Fans have flooded his social media with supportive comments celebrating his choice to focus on personal happiness.
The good news? Burton has explicitly stated he’ll return this summer, meaning his absence will be relatively brief—likely just a few months of airtime.
What to Expect Moving Forward
With General Hospital taping weeks in advance and a production hiatus scheduled, viewers can expect:
- Several more weeks of Jason Morgan storylines before Burton’s break is reflected on screen
- Creative storytelling solutions from writers to explain Jason’s temporary absence from Port Charles
- Potential focus shifts to other characters and storylines during Burton’s hiatus
- A summer return that will likely coincide with major plot developments and sweeps season drama
Burton’s pattern of leaving and returning to General Hospital has become part of his professional narrative. Each departure has been followed by a triumphant comeback, and there’s no reason to expect this time will be any different.
For now, Steve Burton is choosing love, family, and personal time—values that resonate far beyond fictional Port Charles and into real life where they matter most.
