Netflix just made streaming history.
The platform has secured a groundbreaking worldwide exclusive deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment that will reshape how millions of subscribers access blockbuster movies across the globe.
For years, U.S. viewers have enjoyed first dibs on Sony hits like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Anyone But You—but now, that privilege is going global.
This multi-year partnership means subscribers from Tokyo to Toronto will finally get equal access to some of cinema’s biggest franchises, all in one place.
Breaking Down the Historic Agreement
This isn’t just another licensing deal. It’s an industry-first move that gives Netflix exclusive global streaming rights to Sony’s theatrical releases after they leave cinemas and complete their home entertainment run.
The arrangement, known as a “Pay-1” window deal, spans five years from 2027 through 2032. Movies typically arrive on Netflix approximately 100 days after their theatrical debut and remain available for 18 months.
Lauren Smith, Vice President of Licensing and Programming Strategy at Netflix, explained the significance:
Our members all over the world love movies and giving them exclusive access to Sony’s much loved films adds incredible value to their subscriptions. Sony’s impressive slate of iconic film franchises like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and originals like Anyone But You have been popular with our U.S. audience and now we’re excited to expand that offering to our members all around the world.
But the partnership extends beyond new releases. Netflix will also license select titles from Sony’s extensive back catalog, including both feature films and television series.
When Will Your Region Get Access?
The rollout won’t happen overnight. Different territories will gain access as existing regional deals expire, with the transition beginning later this year.
Netflix anticipates full global implementation by early 2029. This expands dramatically on the previous arrangement, which has been in place since 2022 and covered only the United States, Germany, and Southeast Asia.
The Blockbusters Heading to Your Screen
Sony has confirmed several massive titles that will stream exclusively on Netflix under this new agreement. The lineup reads like a greatest-hits collection of upcoming cinema.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse
The highly anticipated conclusion to the Oscar-winning animated trilogy will swing exclusively onto Netflix following its theatrical run. Fans worldwide have been waiting for this finale, and now they’ll all access it simultaneously.
The Legend of Zelda
Nintendo’s live-action adaptation of its beloved gaming franchise represents one of the most anticipated video game movies ever produced. After decades of speculation, this film will finally bring Link’s adventures to life—and Netflix will be its streaming home.
The Beatles Quartet
Academy Award-winner Sam Mendes is directing an audacious four-film project, with each movie focusing on a different member of the legendary band. This unprecedented approach to music biography will stream exclusively on Netflix.
Additional Confirmed Titles
- The Nightingale: Adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s bestselling novel starring sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning
- Buds: New animated feature from Sony Pictures Animation
Why This Matters for Sony
As an independent studio without its own streaming platform, Sony has pursued a different strategy than competitors like Disney, Warner Bros., and Universal.
Paul Littmann, EVP of Global Distribution at Sony Pictures Television, emphasized this approach:
This new Pay-1 deal takes that partnership to the next level and reinforces the enduring appeal of our theatrical releases to Netflix’s global audience. It also further underscores the strength of our independence and unique ability to create meaningful opportunities that benefit our creative stakeholders, consumers, and world-class partners.
Rather than building and maintaining a proprietary streaming service, Sony is maximizing revenue by partnering with established platforms. This strategy allows the studio to focus resources on content creation while ensuring global distribution.
The End of Fragmented Streaming Rights
For years, international subscribers have faced frustrating inconsistencies. A movie available on Netflix in America might stream on Prime Video in the United Kingdom and appear on a completely different local service in Australia.
This deal eliminates that fragmentation for Sony’s catalog. Major franchises including Spider-Man, Jumanji, and Ghostbusters will now have a unified streaming home across all territories.
The consistency benefits both subscribers and Sony. Viewers gain predictable access to content, while Sony simplifies its licensing infrastructure and builds stronger brand association with a single platform.
Netflix’s Aggressive Licensing Strategy
This Sony deal doesn’t exist in isolation. Netflix has been systematically expanding its licensed content portfolio across multiple studios.
The platform recently activated its Universal Pictures first-window deal in the United States a full year ahead of schedule, covering both live-action and animated titles. Additional licensing agreements with MGM and increased pickups from Disney’s 20th Century Fox have further strengthened Netflix’s film library.
This multi-pronged approach suggests Netflix is doubling down on a hybrid model: original productions supplemented by exclusive access to theatrical hits from major studios. The strategy addresses subscriber demands for both fresh originals and proven blockbusters.
What This Means for Subscribers
International Netflix members are the clear winners. Regions that previously waited months—or never received access—to Sony blockbusters will now enjoy the same release window as U.S. subscribers.
The deal also adds significant value to Netflix subscriptions without increasing prices. Access to major theatrical releases has become a key differentiator among streaming platforms, and Netflix has now secured a substantial competitive advantage in this arena.
For movie fans tired of juggling multiple subscriptions and navigating regional restrictions, this partnership offers a streamlined solution—one platform, global access, and a steady pipeline of blockbuster content stretching through 2032.
