Sheinelle Jones is stepping into a new chapter—one filled with hope, healing, and hard-earned joy.
NBC announced that Jones, 47, will officially join Jenna Bush Hager as co-host of the fourth hour of the “Today” show starting January 12.
The promotion comes nearly one year after Hoda Kotb’s departure left the coveted seat open—and after Jones endured one of the most devastating periods of her life.
It’s a moment of triumph wrapped in grief, resilience wrapped in loss.
A Year of Unimaginable Loss
Jones took an extended leave from “Today” in January to care for her husband, Uche Ojeh, who was battling an aggressive form of brain cancer called glioblastoma. She didn’t share many details at the time, only describing it as a “family health matter” while thanking fans for their support.
I sincerely appreciate all of you who have reached out while I’ve been absent from the show. I want to share with you that I’m taking time to deal with a family health matter.
Four months later, in May, viewers learned the heartbreaking truth: Ojeh had passed away at just 45 years old. Savannah Guthrie delivered the news on air, her voice heavy with emotion.
With profound sadness, we share this morning that Uche Ojeh, the husband of our dear friend and ‘Today’ cohost Sheinelle Jones has passed away after a courageous battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer called glioblastoma. There are no words for the pain that we feel for Sheinelle and their three young children. Uche was an incredible person. We all loved him.
Jones and Ojeh had been married for nearly 20 years and shared three children: 16-year-old son Kayin and 13-year-old twins Clara and Uche.
Grief as a “Beautiful Nightmare”
When Jones returned to “Today” in September, she opened up about navigating life without her partner. Her words were raw, honest, and achingly relatable.
The life that I’ve known since I was 19, is no more. I don’t run away from crying anymore when it comes to grief. I see it as, ‘OK, here comes my cleansing rain,’ and it’s OK.
She described her grief as a “beautiful nightmare”—her heart “shattered into a million pieces.” But Jones also emphasized her determination to keep going, day by day.
It’s horrible. It’s just horrible. It stinks, but I am here and I’m OK.
She said she was “proud” of how she’d coped so far, acknowledging both the pain and her own strength in facing it head-on.
A Dream Job at the Perfect Time
Jones returned to her role as co-host of the third hour of “Today” alongside Al Roker and Dylan Dreyer in September. Now, just months later, she’s taking on an entirely new challenge—and she couldn’t be more excited.
Jenna Bush Hager made the announcement on Tuesday, calling Jones “extraordinary” and praising her ability to embody everything the fourth hour stands for.
You all know her, she’s an extraordinary broadcaster, but more importantly, she exemplifies exactly what this show is all about.
Jones, visibly moved, called the opportunity beyond her “wildest dreams.”
This is the real deal, and I get to do it with Jenna.
Hager burst into tears as they embraced, admitting she knew she’d cry before Jones even walked out.
I’m so happy you’re here. I knew I was going to cry before you walked out, I tried not to.
Filling Big Shoes
Hager has been rotating through guest hosts for nearly a year since Hoda Kotb left the fourth hour in January. Kotb also stepped down from co-anchoring the main hour of “Today,” with Craig Melvin stepping in as her replacement.
Meanwhile, Roker and Dreyer will continue co-hosting the third hour alongside Melvin. NBC’s shuffle reflects both strategic planning and genuine care for its on-air talent—especially Jones, who has shown remarkable resilience throughout an unimaginable year.
A New Chapter After Devastating Loss
Jones and Ojeh tied the knot in 2007 and built a life together that included not just their three children, but a stunning home in Livingston Manor, New York. The couple purchased the property for just under $1.4 million in December 2020.
The home sits on 53 acres and offers nearly 4,800 square feet of living space, complete with a library, formal dining room, master suite, heated pool, and a four-bedroom guesthouse. There’s also a large stocked pond on the property.
Jones shared her excitement about the move on Instagram after returning from a five-month stay in South Carolina during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Time to start a new chapter! The last five months have been filled with so much uncertainty, but having this time together as a family has been the silver lining. It’s easier to stay isolated when you’re with people you love. So thankful for what this time has taught me … and the healing power of nature.
Now, years later, Jones is starting another new chapter—this time without her husband, but with new purpose and opportunity.
Moving Forward With Grace
Jones’ promotion marks a joyful milestone in what has been an extraordinarily difficult year. Her story is a testament to resilience, vulnerability, and the courage it takes to keep showing up—even when life shatters everything you thought you knew.
She’s not hiding from grief. She’s walking through it with grace, honesty, and an openness that resonates deeply with anyone who has experienced profound loss.
And now, as she steps into her new role alongside Hager, Jones is proving that even in the wake of heartbreak, new beginnings are possible.
