Hollywood legend Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer were found dead in their Los Angeles home Sunday evening, sending shockwaves through the entertainment industry.
Authorities are treating the case as a homicide investigation.
Their son, Nick Reiner, 32, is now in custody facing felony charges in connection with their deaths.
The tragedy has sparked an outpouring of grief from Hollywood stars—and a stunning political controversy involving President Donald Trump.
Nick Reiner Arrested Hours After Parents’ Deaths
According to LASD Inmate Information Center records, Nick Reiner was arrested at 21:15 local time Sunday and formally charged at 05:04 Monday morning.
He’s currently being held at LAPD jail division on felony charges. The agency involved is listed as LAPD-gang activity, though authorities haven’t released details about what happened inside that Los Angeles home.
Nick is Rob Reiner and Michele Singer’s middle son. Together, the couple shared three children.
A Screenwriter Who Shared His Struggles
Nick worked as a screenwriter, most notably co-writing the 2016 film “Being Charlie,” which his father directed.
The film explored themes of addiction through the story of a drug-addicted teenager. At the time of its release, Nick revealed to People magazine that the screenplay was loosely based on his own struggles with addiction.
Police have not commented on any possible motive for the deaths, and no additional suspects have been named.
Trump’s Shocking Response Sparks Outrage
President Donald Trump posted about the deaths on Truth Social, calling the incident “very sad” while simultaneously attacking Reiner’s political legacy.
Trump claimed—without providing any evidence—that Reiner and his wife “reportedly” died “due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction” with what he called “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J Trump.
Trump’s statement goes far beyond what authorities have revealed. Police have yet to comment on any possible motive, and it’s unclear what reports Trump was referencing.
Reiner was a lifelong Democrat, prominent liberal activist, and frequent Trump critic. In 2017, he publicly called Trump “mentally unfit” for office.
Political Hypocrisy Exposed
According to North America correspondent Anthony Zurcher, Trump’s comments are especially jarring given recent events.
Trump’s administration and conservative allies recently pushed to punish anyone on the left who suggested the assassination of Charlie Kirk was deserved or a consequence of his divisive political views.
Now Trump himself appears to be suggesting Reiner’s political views somehow contributed to his possible murder—without any evidence supporting such a claim.
With Trump’s approval numbers dropping substantially in recent months, Zurcher notes the president may be out of step with a public expecting empathy or grace from their leader, even when tragedy involves an outspoken critic.
Hollywood Mourns ‘A Great Man’
Entertainment industry figures have flooded social media with tributes honoring Reiner’s extraordinary career and personal character.
Monty Python star Eric Idle revealed he’d spoken with Reiner “for over an hour” just the night before his death. The two first met 50 years ago, and Idle remembered him as “a clever, talented and very thoughtful man.”
Kathy Bates, who starred in Reiner’s 1990 film Misery, told NBC News that Reiner had “changed the course of my life.”
A man who made films of every genre to challenge himself as an artist.
She also praised Michele as “a gifted photographer.”
Actor John Cusack called Reiner “a great man,” while Elijah Wood said he was “horrified” by the couple’s deaths.
James Woods, who received an Oscar nomination for starring in Reiner’s 1996 drama Ghosts of Mississippi, said he was “devastated by this terrible event.”
A Legacy of Groundbreaking Films
Ben Stiller called it “a huge loss,” noting that Reiner had “made some of the most formative movies for my generation.”
Spinal Tap is one of the best comedies ever made – and the list goes on.
Reiner’s directorial work spanned decades and genres, including beloved classics like This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Stand By Me, A Few Good Men, and Misery.
Before becoming a legendary director, Reiner was also known for his acting role as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the groundbreaking 1970s sitcom All in the Family.
Investigation Continues
Authorities haven’t revealed much information about what happened inside that Los Angeles home Sunday.
No suspect has been officially named beyond Nick Reiner’s arrest, though that could change as investigators continue their work. Police haven’t confirmed whether they’re searching for additional suspects or if anyone else was present at the scene.
The entertainment world waits for answers while grappling with losing one of Hollywood’s most influential creative voices—and processing a tragedy that’s become entangled with America’s bitter political divisions.
