Broadway’s glittering jewel is preparing to take its final bow.
The Tony Award-winning Moulin Rouge! The Musical will close on July 26, 2026, after a spectacular seven-year run at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in New York City.
By its closing date, the production will have dazzled audiences through 2,265 regular performances and 24 previews, securing its place as the 36th longest-running show in Broadway history.
And there’s more to celebrate before the curtain falls—producer Carmen Pavlovic hints at exciting announcements still to come.
A Record-Breaking Broadway Phenomenon
Since opening to critical acclaim on July 25, 2019, Moulin Rouge! The Musical has become one of the most successful Broadway musicals of the 21st century. The production holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing show in the Al Hirschfeld Theatre’s 100-year history.
The musical’s success extends far beyond Broadway. With over 12 million audience members across 15 productions worldwide, the show currently runs on Broadway, throughout North America on a national tour, in London’s West End, Germany, Korea, The Netherlands, and on a World Tour, with non-replica productions in Scandinavia and Italy.
Against All Odds: A Pandemic Survival Story
Moulin Rouge! The Musical faced its greatest challenge when Broadway went dark on March 12, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But the show’s resilience proved as spectacular as its performances.
The production emerged as one of the key shows leading Broadway’s reopening, resuming performances on September 24, 2021. By late 2022, it officially recouped its Broadway investment—the only musical production to do so from the 2019-2020 season and the only show from that season still running.
Producer’s Heartfelt Tribute
Producer Carmen Pavlovic expressed deep gratitude for the journey, acknowledging the collaborative effort that brought the production to life.
It’s truly been the honor of a lifetime bringing this exceptional show to Broadway. We couldn’t have done it without Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin’s trust in allowing us to adapt their iconic film for the stage and for their creative guidance and generosity throughout.
Pavlovic highlighted the invaluable contributions of director Alex Timbers and the entire creative team, emphasizing that the musical represents something deeper than entertainment.
We’ve always said that Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a celebration of Broadway and of the artists who, against all odds, make it possible. We look forward to six more months of celebrating the remarkable people who created this show and those who perform eight times a week.
She also teased future revelations before the production’s final performance.
And before we take our final bow, we have more exciting announcements that we can’t wait to reveal. See you at the Moulin Rouge, Chickens!
An Award-Winning Creative Team
The production’s success stems from a powerhouse creative team. Moulin Rouge! The Musical swept the 2021 Tony Awards with ten wins, including Best Musical.
The creative lineup includes:
- Director: Tony Award winner Alex Timbers
- Book: Tony Award winner John Logan
- Choreography: Tony Award winner Sonya Tayeh
- Music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements: Tony Award winner Justin Levine
From Boston to Broadway to Global Phenomenon
The musical’s journey began in summer 2018 with its world premiere at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre. From those initial performances, the show evolved into a global entertainment phenomenon.
The Grammy-nominated Original Broadway Cast Recording, produced by Baz Luhrmann, Justin Levine, Matt Stine, and Alex Timbers, debuted at number one on Billboard’s Cast Album chart. Released through Baz Luhrmann’s label House of Iona and RCA Records, the recording captures the musical’s infectious energy.

While the announcement marks the beginning of the end, audiences still have six months to experience the magic. The production continues to perform eight times weekly at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, maintaining the high-energy spectacle that made it a Broadway sensation.
Pavlovic acknowledged crucial partnerships with Moulin Rouge Paris, Twentieth Century Studios, and Craig Pearce, thanking them for their ongoing trust, collaboration, and support in bringing the world of Moulin Rouge! The Musical to life.
