Michael B. Jordan is struggling to find words, and for good reason.
At 38, the veteran actor just earned his first-ever Oscar nomination for his powerful dual performance in Sinners.
But that’s just the beginning of this historic morning.
His film earned a record-breaking 16 nominations—the most any movie has received in Academy Awards history.
A Career-Defining Milestone
Jordan’s journey from breakout roles on The Wire and Friday Night Lights to franchise blockbusters like Creed has been nothing short of remarkable. Yet this Oscar nomination represents something different entirely.
I’ve been in this industry for a long time. I’ve admired and seen the Academy and the other actors in the movies and filmmakers that I’ve looked up to and been inspired by my whole life. To be in those conversations and in that company is a solidifying feeling.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Jordan’s emotion was palpable throughout the conversation. He laughed in disbelief, cheered loudly, and paused multiple times as feelings overwhelmed him.
Making Oscar History with Sinners
The 16 nominations for Sinners shatter previous records, cementing the film as an unprecedented Academy Awards phenomenon. Director Ryan Coogler—Jordan’s longtime collaborator of over a decade—earned personal nominations for directing, writing, and producing.
When asked how he processed the historic achievement, Jordan admitted he’s still digesting the news.
It’s really a testament to the film as a whole and all the pieces involved and the people that went to go see this movie and watched this film. It meant something to them and they felt something — to see how it resonated throughout the year with people, man.
The First Phone Call That Mattered Most
Jordan didn’t set an alarm for 5:30 a.m. to catch the nominations live. Currently in the editing room working on The Thomas Crown Affair, he chose to wake naturally to whatever news awaited.
His first call? Not to Coogler. Not to his agent.
His mother.
My mom was my first call. It was great. A lot of tears and the reason why I’m even in this industry and why I’m acting at all — why that was even an idea. To talk to the woman who started it all first meant the world.
He and Coogler played phone tag throughout the morning, their mutual excitement creating a comedy of missed connections that they’ll soon rectify.
Celebrating His Costars’ Nominations
Jordan’s genuine excitement extended beyond his personal achievement. Both Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo earned their first Oscar nominations as well—a fact that elicited enthusiastic cheering from Jordan during his interview.
Woo! Yeah, so happy for Delroy, man. So happy for Wunmi. I’m so incredibly happy for Coog and everybody else, but Delroy, Wunmi — I couldn’t be happier for them.
What This Year’s Nominations Say About Cinema’s Future
Reflecting on the broader slate of nominees, Jordan sees encouraging signs for an industry still recovering from pandemic disruptions.
It’s actually a really, really great year as far as people bouncing back to theaters post-pandemic. I think these numbers and the turnout for these movies has been telling that the artists, when given the opportunity and the chance and the space and the support, can deliver on cinematic experiences that bring people back to the cinema.
Being part of that theatrical resurgence adds another layer of meaning to Sinners‘ success.
The Studio That Took a Swing
Jordan made sure to credit Warner Brothers executives Mike De Luca, Pam Abdy, and David Zaslav for supporting Coogler’s vision without compromise.
Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy and Warner Brothers and [David] Zaslav supported Coog’s vision and took a swing with us in a big way. Having that pay off? The journey of it has been a fierce and swift one. You focus on building that house and people will come.
That faith in artistic vision yielding historic results proves what’s possible when studios trust filmmakers.
No Time for Celebration (Yet)
When asked about celebration plans, Jordan’s answer was quintessentially professional—he was heading straight back to editing The Thomas Crown Affair. The work doesn’t stop, even on historic days.
But he promised reflection would come tonight.
I’ll take some time tonight to just really reflect. I mean, I don’t even know. There will be signs though. There will be signs of celebration.
For someone who’s given audiences memorable performances for nearly two decades, this Oscar nomination represents validation from the industry’s highest institution. Jordan’s journey from television prodigy to blockbuster star to Academy Award nominee is complete—though undoubtedly, this is just another beginning.
With Sinners making history and Jordan’s first nomination finally arrived, the celebration—whenever it happens—will be well-deserved.
