After four seasons of gritty crime drama, Mayor of Kingstown is heading toward its final chapter.
Paramount+ has renewed the Jeremy Renner-led series for a fifth and final season, bringing the Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon creation to a close with eight episodes.
This marks a significant milestone as the first ongoing Sheridan series to set an end date since Skydance’s acquisition of Paramount Global last August.
While other Sheridan properties like Landman, Tulsa King, and Lioness continue expanding, Mayor of Kingstown will conclude its bloody saga of power, corruption, and survival in Michigan’s prison town.
From Shaky Start to Critical Acclaim
Mayor of Kingstown has undergone a remarkable transformation since its 2021 debut. The show initially struggled with critics, earning just 33% on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season.
Season 4, however, achieved a perfect 100% rating—a stunning turnaround that reflects the series’ evolution. The addition of Emmy winner Edie Falco as a headstrong new Warden opposite Oscar nominee Renner elevated the drama to new heights.
The most recent season pushed Mike McLusky (Renner) to his limits as new players scrambled to fill the power vacuum left by the Russians. Gang warfare threatened to consume Kingstown entirely, with those Mike loves facing unprecedented danger.
The Numbers Tell a Different Story
Despite critical praise and loyal viewership, Mayor of Kingstown hasn’t matched the ratings performance of Sheridan’s other series. Season 4 failed to crack Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 streaming originals—a first for the show after previous seasons made the list.
The timing proved challenging. Season 4 aired simultaneously with new installments of Landman (Season 2) and Tulsa King (Season 3), both of which dominated Nielsen’s charts.

Season 5 will consist of eight episodes, down from the 10-episode standard for Seasons 1 through 4. Negotiations reportedly included discussions of a six-episode order before settling on eight.
The reduced episode count reflects both budgetary considerations and narrative efficiency. Sheridan and Dillon will have eight hours to resolve the explosive gang war that concluded Season 4 and bring Mike McLusky’s story to its intended ending.
Both Renner and Falco will return for the final season, maintaining the dynamic that helped Season 4 achieve critical success.
The Original Seven-Season Vision
Co-creator Hugh Dillon previously revealed that Sheridan had mapped out a seven-season arc for Mayor of Kingstown—a plan conceived 15 years before the show premiered.
Sheridan has an ending for it in Season 7. Whether it goes that far or that’s where we get [who knows], but he has an ending, and everyone knows about it.
Dillon elaborated on Sheridan’s long-term storytelling approach in a Screen Rant interview last year.
Our goal is to get to that Season 7, because that’s as far as we can get, because that’s where he’s always had it. 15 years ago, he had it. 15 years ago, ‘So, here’s how it’s starting, Mitch is going to get killed off in the first 10 pages, and season 7, episode 10, this is where Mike’s going to be.’
Mitch McLusky, played by Kyle Chandler, was Mike’s older brother whose shocking death in the series premiere set everything in motion. Sheridan’s master plan apparently extends from that first brutal moment to Mike’s ultimate fate.
Now, with just five seasons instead of seven, Sheridan and Dillon must compress their vision while delivering a satisfying conclusion.
Paramount+ Reshapes the Sheridan Universe
Mayor of Kingstown represents a legacy show within the Taylor Sheridan universe—part of Paramount+’s core identity. Streaming chief Cindy Holland called the Sheridan portfolio “a really great foundation” for Paramount+ last August.
However, Sheridan himself announced plans to move to NBCUniversal in 2029, adding uncertainty to Paramount+’s long-term strategy around his content.
The decision to conclude Mayor of Kingstown while renewing other Sheridan series signals Paramount+’s evolving priorities. They’re keeping shows with stronger viewership metrics while allowing others to end with dignity.
What Season 5 Must Accomplish
Season 4 ended with gang warfare reaching a violent climax. Mike’s fragile control over Kingstown shattered as multiple factions battled for dominance.

While Mayor of Kingstown may not have achieved the viewership heights of Yellowstone or Landman, it carved out its own identity within the Sheridan universe. Setting an end date allows Sheridan and Dillon to craft a deliberate conclusion rather than facing abrupt cancellation. Eight episodes provides sufficient runway to honor character arcs and resolve major storylines.
