Millions lined the streets of New York City on Thursday as the 99th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade delivered its signature blend of spectacle and nostalgia.
An estimated 3.5 million spectators witnessed giant balloons floating above Manhattan, elaborate floats gliding through Midtown, and star-studded performances that kicked off the 2025 holiday season in style.
But beyond the balloons and Broadway numbers, this year’s parade marked a special reunion that had fans reaching for tissues.
Hoda Kotb returned to co-host NBC’s coverage alongside Savannah Guthrie and Al Roker, just months after departing the Today show following her remarkable 26-year run at NBC News.
An Emotional Homecoming

Broadway Takes Center Stage
Theater fans were treated to performances from several current Broadway productions. The cast of Buena Vista Social Club brought Cuban rhythms to Herald Square, while the revival of Ragtime delivered powerful vocals and emotional depth.

Balloons and Floats Steal the Show
While musical performances dazzled, the parade’s signature giant balloons remained the main attraction. This year featured 8 massive helium balloons, 33 mid-sized balloons, and 29 elaborate floats.
New character balloons making their debut included Labubu, Buzz Lightyear, and Super Mario—delighting children and nostalgic adults alike.

The 2025 parade introduced six spectacular new floats:

- Master Chocolatier Ballroom

- Upside Down Invasion: Stranger Things
Fan favorites also returned, including 1-2-3 Sesame Street, Big Turkey Spectacular, Camp Snoopy, Candy Cosmos, and World of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The Classic Route and Closing Tradition
The parade followed its traditional path, launching from West 77th Street and Central Park West before winding through Columbus Circle. From there, it crossed Central Park South to Sixth Avenue, ultimately concluding at Herald Square outside Macy’s flagship store.
In addition to the balloons and floats, 33 clown crews, 11 marching bands, and nine performance groups kept energy levels sky-high throughout the 2.5-mile route.
As always, the parade concluded with the most anticipated arrival of all: Santa Claus gliding down Sixth Avenue in his sleigh, officially signaling that the holiday season had begun.
Kotb even managed to give a special shoutout to a dear friend from the Today show during the broadcast—a touching moment that reminded viewers why her presence had been so missed.
