Ali Larter is pulling back the curtain on one of Hollywood’s least discussed challenges.
The 49-year-old actress, who plays Angela Norris in Paramount+’s hit series “Landman,” recently opened up about the reality of filming bikini scenes—and it’s not what most people think.
During a candid interview with People magazine, Larter didn’t hold back about which scenes make her the most uncomfortable on set.
Spoiler alert: it’s not the dramatic confrontations or emotional breakdowns.
The Truth About Bikini Scenes
Larter described shooting scenes in her character’s signature revealing attire as “tough, in a weird way.”
I don’t think there’s an actress alive that’s like, ‘Woo! Got a bikini scene!’ Nobody wants to do it.
The “Varsity Blues” star emphasized just how challenging these moments are for her personally.
Those are the hardest for me. I don’t enjoy them. It’s just part of the story that I’m telling, and I’m an actress, so I get on board. But those are definitely my least favorite.
Her honesty sheds light on an aspect of acting that audiences rarely consider—the mental and physical toll of appearing vulnerable on camera.
Playing Angela Norris: More Than Meets the Eye
Angela serves as the confident, glamorous ex-wife of Billy Bob Thornton’s Tommy Norris. Larter noted that her character is physically expressive and “loves the spray tans, and the blonde.”
Portraying Angela requires significant effort and discipline behind the scenes. Larter explained she works hard at “staying in shape for this role and all that comes with it.”
The 4:30 AM Wake-Up Call
During a November interview with People, Larter revealed the demanding routine she maintains while filming.
I’ll tell you what. I work really hard, OK? I’m not pretending that I don’t. I’m up at 4:30 [a.m.] on Mondays. I go for a run. It’s only 30 minutes. I try to eat very clean, but I eat. I’m one of those protein mommies. I eat so much protein all day long. It works for me.
Her fitness regimen includes running and “a lot of strength training” to maintain the physical presence her character demands.
Fighting Insecurity to Own the Role
Beyond physical preparation, Larter faces internal battles before stepping in front of cameras in revealing wardrobe.
In the end, anytime you have to put on a bathing suit and walk in front of anybody, it’s really difficult. When I look around, the sexiest women I know are the women that own it. So, part of getting there with Angela is owning it.
She admitted the psychological preparation rivals physical training in importance.
But no matter what, it’s like, I’ve got to spend all this time fighting off my own insecurities, my own anxiety, to be able to put on that bikini and walk into these scenes.
Creating Mental Space for Confidence
Larter told People that successfully embodying Angela requires complete mental commitment.
There is no space in my mind for insecurity. I wouldn’t be able to do it if I allowed insecurity to creep in. And I really do believe, sexiness — yeah, she’s sexy on the outside, but guess what? She’s owning it on the inside, too.
This mindset shift proves essential for bringing authenticity to a character defined by confidence and self-assurance.
Behind-the-Scenes Prep Routine
In June, Larter shared details about her preparation process when filming season two. She posted a mirror selfie in a red bikini from her trailer, opening up about filming bikini scenes.
Her typical prep day includes:
- 5:30 AM wake-up: Starting with celery juice and coffee
- Morning workout: Running and strength training sessions
- Ice water facial: Dunking her face to reduce puffiness
- Spray tan maintenance: Slathering with oil to protect the tan
- 7 AM departure: Heading to set fully prepared
Weekend Recovery Mode
When not filming, Larter prioritizes recovery with her family.
I fall apart on the weekends. I lay in bed, sometimes 12 hours. I’m not kidding you.
This balance between intense dedication and necessary rest helps maintain both physical health and mental well-being throughout demanding filming schedules.
Her Favorite Scenes to Film
Despite the challenges of certain scenes, Larter finds joy in quieter moments on set.
My favorite is when I get to have a real, honest quiet exchange between Tommy and Angela. I just love that. And I love the old folks!
These intimate scenes showcase her range as an actress beyond physical appearance, highlighting the emotional depth she brings to Angela’s complex relationship with her ex-husband.
Larter’s candid discussion about bikini scenes reveals an important truth about acting: confidence on screen requires tremendous work off camera, both physically and mentally. Her willingness to share both struggles and strategies offers valuable insight into professional dedication while normalizing the insecurities many women face.
Both seasons of “Landman” are currently available to stream on Paramount+.
